About Us
A small charity with a big purpose - better lives for people with HFI
Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) UK was founded by Bill Armstrong, an adult with HFI. He has been joined by Carol Westwood, who also has HFI, and Dannie Edwards, parent of a young child with HFI

Why we do what we do
It is VITAL to raise awareness of HFI to save lives and prevent unnecessary suffering caused by misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis.

Our team
We are all brought together by a shared commitment to support people with HFI and to make a real difference.

Bill Armstrong
Founder and Trustee - lives with HFI
Bill Armstrong has been an advocate for those who have HFI for over 25 years, challenging and correcting dangerous assumptions regarding HFI via an internet discussion board. Bill is a qualified Analytical Quality Control Lab Technician, having also worked in animal feeds and in agricultural industry chemical sprays and fertilisers as a farm advisor. Bill brings his experience in science and quality control to offer detailed information, particularly regarding various sugars, including their safety and toxicity for HFI.

Carol Westwood
Trustee and Advisor - lives with HFI
Carol is retired from an NHS career in nursing, midwifery, health visiting and specialist nursing/psychosexual therapy. Carol brings her knowledge and skills from her nursing background, plus lived experience of HFI and the problems it can cause.

Dannie Edwards
Volunteer - parent of a child with HFI
Dannie has a 4 year old daughter with HFI. She has been a qualified Secondary Maths teacher for more than 10 years, so has a good understanding of the education system in England. Dannie's daughter was the first in the family to have a diagnosis of HFI, and as a result her daughter was very unwell for the first nearly 2 years of her life. The journey to diagnosis was complex and traumatic, which led to Dannie wanting to volunteer for the charity to support other parents of little HFI-ers.

Professor Timothy Cox
Medical Lead
Professor Timothy M. Cox is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Physician at Cambridge University Hospitals. He is a leading authority on inherited metabolic diseases and has made a major contribution to improving the understanding and diagnosis of HFI and related conditions.
